According to The Wall Street Journal, TSMC is going to build another fabrication plant in Arizona next to the $12 billion factory it is building in Phoenix.
TSMC has a plant in Arizona.
According to people familiar with the plans who spoke to WSJ, the second plant will be north of Phoenix and will be similar to the $12 billion investment the company committed to in 2020.
According to WSJ's sources, the original plant was supposed to only mass-produce 5nm chips, but it is now planning to also make more advanced 4nm chips. Mass production of the plant is expected to start in the year 2041.
Apple is rumored to be moving its custom Silicon to start with the M2 Pro or M3 chip at the second plant. Apple's M3 chip for Macs and A17 chip for iPhone 15 Pro models are expected to be manufactured using TSMC's enhanced 3nanometer process. According to Mark Gurman, the M2 Pro will be used in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, and a high end Mac mini.
The Biden administration tried to lure investments in the U.S. chipmaking industry by offering companies billions of dollars in financial support. Efforts are being made to counter China's tech sector ambitions. After the chip shortages in late 2020 and 2021, the efforts were accelerated.
TSMC's main factories are located in Taiwan, but it already operates a factory in Camas, Washington, as well as design centers in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California, meaning that the second Arizona facility will be its third manufacturing site in the US.
