The architect of baseball's champion, James Click, is in talks with the Houston Astros on a new contract but has not yet come to an agreement.
Click's contract ended when the Astros won the World Series. He denied that he had agreed to a one-year deal. It means that it is not complete when you are having discussions.
Click said he met with Astros owner Jim Crane on Monday in the hours between the team's championship parade and his flight to the general managers meetings. The Astros called a news conference for Wednesday afternoon, which Click said he found out about recently, after the team announced it, during which they're expected to announce a contract extension for manager Click said he was going to be at the news conference to put together the team.
Jeff Luhnow was fired as general manager of the Astros in 2020 after it was revealed that the team that won the World Series in 2017 stole signs. Click took over a talented team that was in danger after the scandal. The Astros wouldn't comment when reached by ESPN.
The Astros front-office employees were concerned about whether Click would come back because of the differences between him and Crane. Click entered this season as a joke. Sources say that Crane has been leaning on advisers Jeff Bagwell and Reggie Jackson. At the trade deadline this year, Crane spiked an agreed-upon trade that would have landed the Astros catcher from the Chicago Cubs for a right-handed starter, according to reports.
Click said that they were different. Let me clarify thatJim is. Some of the things we do are very different. When it comes to a relationship between a boss and an employee, there are some things that are very lined up. He likes to act fast. I tend to take a more deliberate approach. He gives you resources to accomplish what he wants you to do.
Click didn't think the Wednesday news conference would be a deadline for him to negotiate a new contract. He was able to leave the Astros' job for another team because of his old deal. Click wants the situation not to get out of hand.
He said he's optimistic. My family lives in Houston. We've been here a long time. I enjoy living in the town. There is a lot of different things. The crowd at the parade was one of the highlights for me, as it showed just what a global city Houston is. It was displayed in full view. I have never been a part of something like that. It was hard to stop. We are very happy that our kids are happy. We are very comfortable. I hope to be back.
General managers who win the World Series return often. Most of the time, they leave of their own free will. Even though he remains under contract with the Brewers, the former Astros assistant GM stepped down from his role as the team's president in October. If he can't come to an agreement, the closest thing to Click would be Alex Anthopoulos, the former Toronto Blue Jay general manager.
It's almost impossible to find someone who can work with the people in the Astros organization. There are things that are good and there are things that are bad. It's up to you to take it all on balance.
Click wouldn't say what he was looking for in a contract, whether it was more independence over baseball-operations decisions or not. The experience of running a team with Crane's involvement is different than his other job in baseball, where the owner is more hands-on.
Click said it was a little different than the one he owned.
Click was among his peers at a media session at Resorts World Las Vegas, where the GM meetings are being held before free agency starts on Thursday. Free agents can't re-sign with their current teams until then.
The Astros will have a lot of work to do this winter, with several free agents. The soon-to-be-40-year-old Verlander, who is expected to win the American League Cy Young Award, will be coveted by many teams.
Will Click be able to pursue Verlander? Click came to Las Vegas with a plan regardless of his employment status, even though he had just won the championship. He said he's on a hot streak. I will hit the tables.
