Josh Shapiro won the Pennsylvania governor's race and kept the swing state office in Democratic hands, according to NBC News.
Tom Wolf was the first governor to reach the limit of two consecutive four-year terms in the Commonwealth.
The race was decided after a significant financial and polling advantage was enjoyed by the winner. The Democrat spent more money on his campaign than he did.
In the lead-up to Election Day, the polls showed Shapiro leading. In an average of polls, he held a 10-percentage point edge over Mastriano.
Prior to becoming Pennsylvania's attorney general, the Democrat was a state Representative. He ran on issues such as protecting abortion access, defeating false claims about fraud in the 2020 election and reform of the criminal justice system.
There is a retired U.S. Army colonel in the 33rd district. Mastriano was endorsed by Donald Trump and was campaigning on plans to fight violent crime, enforce stronger borders, and act on Trump's false claims of election fraud.
There was a riot on the grounds of the Capitol.
Mastriano made the repeal of Act 77 a central part of his campaign promises. No-excuse mail-in voting is allowed in Pennsylvania under Act 77. The claims of election fraud have been made in the Commonwealth.
Many of the cultural issues Republicans tried to leverage to increase turnout were listed as priorities by Mastriano. He said that he would immediately end vaccine requirements and mask mandates when he took office and that he wanted to reverse Covid -era policies. Second Amendment rights, ban critical race theory teaching, and bar trans women from women's locker rooms are some of the plans he has for the future.
He assured supporters that he would veto any restrictions on mail-in voting and appoint a secretary of state to affirm that protection. Same-day voter registration would be created by him.
