Kemp had been tasked with overseeing elections in his role as secretary of state. 53,000 voter registration applications were held back by his office due to what they said was roll maintenance. They said the move was voter suppression.

Kemp was not Progressives when it came to voting rights. He signed into law a number of new restrictions, including new ID requirements for Absentee Ballots, limits on the use of ballot drop boxes, and criminalized the handing out of food or water to voters waiting in lines.

The law was signed in front of a painting of a plantation where black people were once enslaved. The All-Star game was moved out of Atlanta because of the legislation.

The governor of Georgia signed a six-week ban on abortions that went into effect this year after the Supreme Court legalized the procedure in 1973.
