We went to visit extended family in Europe. As the trip approached, we were concerned about airport chaos, long security lines, and mountains of lost baggage. A friend of ours decided to drive from Warsaw to Amsterdam instead of taking a flight. Two days before our flight out of Schiphol, a local friend strongly recommended that we buy some AirTags for our luggage, just in case.
I don't think I'm the last person to think you can use a tracker to keep track of things. I was able to find a three-pack on CoolBlue for 140 euro. We thought the AirTag was worth more than the four-pack in the US because of the horror stories. The next day they were delivered.
We made our flight after a very early wake-up call, a three-hour wait in the security line, and a cross- terminal sprint. When my heart rate returned to normal, I pulled up the Find My app, hit the items tab, and was able to confirm that all three of our AirTagged bags were on board.
We arrived home exhausted with our bags, phones, and children.
The AirTags gave us one less thing to worry about, since we didn't have to track down our luggage. If you want to use Apple Air tags for luggage, you need to set up, rename, and reset them. It's possible to put one in your car to help you find a parking spot. It's a good idea to hide it under your bike bell. It should be put on a dog collar. It seems like they are useful.
The first time you set up an AirTag, there isn't much. Pull the battery tab to get the AirTag. There is no need to download an app. Put the AirTag on the item you want to track. It's all done.
Attaching the AirTag to the outside of the bag didn't seem like a good idea so I stuck them inside our travel crib and two suitcases.
We didn't need to keep track of the luggage after we left. Simply open the items tab in the Find My app, select the tag you want to rename, and then scroll down to rename the item. The Travel Crib tracker is no longer available.
Family Sharing for Air tags can only be associated with one Apple ID at a time. There are good reasons for that. Air tags can be used to spy on people without their knowledge or consent. If they detect that they have traveled with someone other than the person they belong to, AirTags are supposed to alert them.
It's easy to see how an AirTag shared within a family could be used to track someone against their will. Don't track people without their permission. I thought about putting AirTags in my children's backpacks, but I wouldn't unless I asked them first. People are kids.
I was the only one who could see where our bags were during our flights because of the restriction on sharing Air tags. I had to reset the AirTags before my spouse could use them.
All you have to do is take your AirTag out of your account. Hit the items tab, then hit the remove item button. The new owner needs to bring the AirTag with them to set it up. Theory.
I didn't like it. You have to reset your AirTag sometimes. You have to take out the battery, put it back in, put the cover back on, and press down until it starts to sound. The AirTag should be able to pair again if you do that five times. I am a bit disappointed that there was no incantation involved. You can add your own.
The CR2032 batteries are used by Air tags. I was expecting them to be open. It is nice to receive a pleasant surprise.
I do find uses for AirTags, even though I am a little annoyed at paying nearly double the going rate for mine. If I ever get the chance to fly in an airplane again, I will use your pack of pretzels to track my luggage.
