A backup plan is being considered by the Boston Red Sox in the event of the departure of veteran shortstop XanderBogaerts in the winter.

They are exploring the market for a second baseman and have begun reaching out to teams to see who might be available.

A source told Feinsand that they don't think they're going to spend a lot of money on a shortstop. When they signedTrevor Story last year, they knew it was possible.

Sean McAdam of Boston Sports Journal reported last month that John Henry and Tom Werner met withaerts to reiterate that re-signing him is their top priority.

Last month, Chaim said, per MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

We've been there. Our position remains the same. Nothing I say really matters unless there is a deal. We want to keep him here for a long time and we want him here on a deal that we will look back on and say, "This was great for everybody."

Story would be moved back to his natural position if he were to leave, according to a report. The 29-year-old played second base for Boston last season after signing a six-year,140 million deal with the franchise.

Story was the Colorado Rockies' top infielder for six years.

It makes sense for the Red Sox to look for a lower-priced second baseman since they should be able to get a significant raise from the $20 million per year thataerts should get.

It would be difficult for the Red Sox to absorb the loss ofBogaerts. A leader in the locker room, the 30-year-old is the longest tenured player on the team.

He is one of Boston's best hitters and is coming off a season in which he slashed.307/.377/.454 with 15 home runs, 73RBI and eight stolen bases. He hit.300 in three of the last four years.

He has been named an All-Star four times and has helped Boston win two World Series titles.

Losing that production would be a huge blow to a team that finished last in the American League East in each of the last three seasons.

It's not clear which second basemen the RedSox might be targeting.
