As users fret over the direction that new owner Musk is taking the company, a lot of them have switched to Mastodon, an alternative. Mastodon has gained nearly half a million new users since October 27 when the CEO of Musk's companies took over the social networking site. Should we all be setting up our accounts?

Mastodon might not be a good fit for a person like you who likes to use basic functions. If you want to try something new on the internet, then Mastodon is a good place to start. There is a person who isn't there.

What is Mastodon?

Eugen Rochko was the founder of Mastodon. Mastodon is a nonprofit and its goal is to benefit the public, not shareholders.

I am now an employee with a fixed wage, unlike the past 5 years when I was a sole proprietor of Mastodon. I was willing to go this route because I want Mastodon to have more resources for things like hiring extra developers, UX designers, developing official apps and so on, and I want there to be a clear boundary between raising money for that cause and my personal income.

The underlying system behind Mastodon is much more complex than it looks. The service is a distributed network which operates in a similar way to email.

When you create your account, you choose a server, similar to how you choose to open an email account on a webmail service. If you sign up for Mastodon on the climate justice server, your address will be@climatejustice. social. Even if you sign up with a different server, you'll still be able to communicate with users from any other server. You can't communicate with anyone from the blocked server if it's an "unscrupulous group"

The Mastodon lingo

Individual communities are referred to as instances or server by Mastodon users. The Mastodon server can be run by individuals, groups or organizations that have their own set of rules for how users can sign up. Some server allow anyone to join, while others only allow invite-only members. A server for professional scientists requires applicants to include a link to their research in order to be considered a professional.

It's possible to move your account later if you choose the right server. You can follow people even if they are on a different server.

Mastodon is part of a web of various social media services. You know, having a social media account doesn't mean you can use it on the photo sharing site. If you're interested in other social networks, you can use your Mastodon account to get access to them.

This is fading out of favor since it is kind of silly. Older third-party clients often refer to them as "toot", despite the fact that many people are just calling them "posts".

Mastodon supports a number of social networking sites. It doesn't support the concept of quote tweets because it's called "boosts" The founder said it encourages speaking at your audience instead of with the person you're talking to.

You can only add people to a list if you already follow them. Direct messages on Mastodon aren't private, they're just usernames.

What does it mean that Mastodon is open source?

The developers of the platform don't own the copyright and anyone can download, modify and install Mastodon.

It doesn't mean that you can get Mastodon's code without acknowledging the source. Truth Social was passed off as original software when it was launched by Donald Trump. Mastodon didn't like that.

How do you create a Mastodon account?

When you arrive on the Mastodon website, you can click a button called "create account" which will take you to a page listing server. You can choose from a variety of factors, like language, region and sign-up speed. If it's a server that requires you to be approved, you may need to wait a bit. You can find people to follow even if they are registered on the same server.

How do you decide which Mastodon server to join?

It is difficult to find a home base that meshes with your interests, even though Mastodon has helpful resources. If you have friends who are on Mastodon, ask them if they have suggestions. Once you get into the swing of things, you can change your server affiliation at any time.

Can you talk to people on other Mastodon servers besides your own?

You can reply to people outside of your server. If you want to follow someone on a different server, you have to use the search box on the server to find them. You can't just go to their profile and follow them, that's not possible.

What’s the difference between the Home, Local and Federated timelines?

You can see posts from people that you follow on your Home timeline. The Local and Federated timelines show posts from all users in your server. If you want to hide timeline updates behind a click, you can turn on slow mode in Preferences.

What is Mastodon’s moderation policy?

You should read the policy on the server you choose to make sure it matches up with your values.

What are the drawbacks of Mastodon when compared with Twitter?

The size of Mastodon's user base is less than that of a major social networking site. It isn't intuitive to navigate since it hasn't been designed for a large global audience. There could be more developers joining the project in the future.

Sometimes it doesn't work because Mastodon isn't as well-resourced. The service has been slow at times in the last few days as the server adjusted to the huge amount of new users. When you try to follow a number of your friends on the service, you have to wait between batches, which can affect other areas of use.

What are the benefits of Mastodon compared with Twitter?

Mastodon isn't owned by Musk. It's going to be difficult for Mastodon to replicate the same "watercooler of the world" vibe. It is possible that some users prefer Mastodon to Twitter. A variety of different user experiences can be found in individual communities. While the user base on Mastodon is smaller, this can lead to more personal and direct conversations at times, compared with the use of social media.

Is Mastodon safer than Twitter?

It's called Mastodon and it's what you think of it. If you're looking for a more controlled online experience, you can join a server with strict rules against harassment. Mastodon features are built with the idea of not being harassed. You can't search by words that show up in a toot. If you want your post to be discoverable, you can tag it, but if you don't, no one will find it if they search "red sox"

It is possible to surface the posts you have written, favorited, boosted or have been mentioned in with a text-based search.

Users can add a content warning to a post directly in the compose box with the service. Some Mastodon users have been making fun of this by saying that their post would be about the drama on the micro-blogging site.

Can I post images and video?

Mastodon doesn't support media as much as it would like. Mastodon simply supports images, videos, audio and polls and does not support a variety of media and other data appended to tweets.

Up to four images can be added to a post. There is a file size limit of 40 megabytes for video and audio.

Can I post privately to friends?

Mastodon gives you the ability to set your post's privacy at the time of writing, similar to how Twitter gives users the ability to limit their visibility. Posts can be visible by all, unlisted to make them public, only visible to your followers, or only visible to those you have mentioned.

Can I post threads?

Yes, that's right! This isn't built into Mastodon officially, but it is on the social networking site. You have to reply to your own posts in the old fashioned way.

Can I get verified on Mastodon?

It is not possible to say yes. There isn't a universal verification system on social media. If you want to prove you are who you say you are, you can add links to your Mastodon profile that have a specific attribute to prove it.

Some server are having a good time with the idea of verification. If you want, you can add blue-and-white checkmarks and other symbols to your display name, which will make you look verified. Sort of like the new verification system of the social networking site. It's for free.

Is Mastodon here to stay?

It is not clear if Mastodon will continue growing at such a rapid rate in the weeks to come. Mastodon has just one million users, which is less than the 237 million daily active users of the social networking site. Not all social networks are created equal, and you might find that you prefer tooting about your favorite games in a dedicated server. You will just ride out the Muskening on social media if you find that the system is not clear. Do you want to go on your own adventure?

I’m not sure I want to leave Twitter. Can I cross-post from Twitter to Mastodon?

This can be done by way of third party tools. They require you to authorize your account with Mastodon. Moa Party allows you to get specific as to which crosses are posted. Mastodon is one of the tools that is available here.

Can I find my Twitter friends on Mastodon?

This is possible with third party tools. Many Mastodon users have tried out tools like Fedi finder and De birdify.

Will Mastodon work with Bluesky, the decentralized social network that Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is building?

Unless Bluesky adopts the Mastodon protocol. Bluesky has decided to build its own networking protocol, Bluesky, which will also be the name of the social networking app. There is some skepticism among the developer and open source community about whether or not Bluesky's decision to go its own way is really about its own protocol's advantages or if it is more about producing a spec it could eventually control.

There are many existing protocols for decentralizing discourse, including ActivityPub, SSB, Matrix, & RSS. Each of these are successful in their own right, but none of them fully met the goals we had for a network that enables global long-term public conversations at scale.
