Nintendo may be planning a deeper dive into mobile gaming in order to make up for the decline in Switch sales. Along with its earnings report released on Tuesday, the company announced a joint venture with DeNA, the Japanese mobile gaming giant that co-developed several Nintendo titles foriOS andANDROID
The new company will be called Nintendo Systems Co., and it is expected to open in April of 2023. Nintendo and DeNA formed a joint venture in 2015, which has already proven to be incredibly profitable for the company. According to data provided to mobilegamer.biz by Sensor Tower, the company's mobile games had made over $1 billion in lifetime revenue. The first Nintendo mobile game to reach $1 billion in global player spending was Fire Emblem Heroes.
Nintendo reported a decline in sales of the Switch. The company blamed the chip shortage for the drop in its sales. In May, Nintendo barely met its sales target for the Switch, and in August it reported a decline in sales. The sales forecast for the switch has been slashed.
Nintendo and DeNA have not released a new mobile game in the last year. The most recent mobile game was launched in partnership with Pokemon Go developers. It brought in $5.3 million in revenue in the first six months after it was released. Nintendo said in its earnings report that its mobile and intellectual property sales fell by 7.5 percent.
Nintendo will likely have a strong holiday season as it works to deliver as many consoles as possible to consumers in all regions of the world. Bayonetta 3 was released last month and there are two more on the way.
