AMC is working with Zoom to turn some of its movie theaters into massive video conferencing spaces for 75 to 150 people for when you really need your meeting to leave an impact. For an additional cost, AMC will provide concierge-style personalized handling of meeting needs, as well as food and beverage offerings.
The theater chain says that when companies are planning a gathering, they can book theaters across the country online, so their employees can have the same experience. When you book the service, you will get a three-hour block at any theater you choose, with AMC and Zoom giving the necessary equipment for a fully functional Zoom Rooms experience. The conference room system is called theZoom Rooms.
The service will only be available in 17 major U.S. markets next year, according to the company.
According to the press release, the move is a way to connect remote workers and provide a centrally located venue in cities that aren't necessarily located near your company's headquarters. The partnership makes sense as it allows AMC to make money off of empty theaters. AMC's Q2 earnings report revealed that it's doing better than it was in 2020, but it's still expected to announce losses during its Q3 earnings call.
I feel like the theater experience may be a bit overwhelming since I have attended a lot of zoom meetings. AMC brags about having state-of-the-art sight and sound technology, but it's hard to imagine any of them being improved by it. I'm not sure if anything would be improved by a bucket of popcorn.
The AMC says that it could be used for in-person events and that businesses could use it to present things to customers. I can see people going to their local theater to watch a Comic-Con panel or an announcement from their favorite gadgets maker if that's what they want to do with the tech.
