Even though a storm is developing in the Atlantic Ocean and is expected to head towards Kennedy Space Center, NASA is still going ahead with its Artemis 1 moon mission.

Despite a potentially dangerous storm in the Atlantic Ocean east of Florida's Space Coast, NASA will keep the Artemis 1 mission's Space Launch System rocket and capsule on the launch pad.

The agency said in a statement that the Space Launch System rocket will remain at Launch Pad 39B. NASA is just one week away from the launch of the Artemis program, which will see humanity return to the moon to establish a permanent lunar presence and enable future deep space exploration, if the storm doesn't grow in size.

Kennedy Space Center personnel will continue to monitor the weather, make sure all personnel are safe, and evaluate the status of the Monday, Nov. 14 launch attempt for the Artemis 1 mission as we proceed and receive updated precautions about the weather

The agency is working with the US Space Force and the U.S. National Hurricane Center to watch the storm. A dangerous storm surge is possible as early as Wednesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The Space Force's Space Launch Delta 45, which oversees the adjacent Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, issued a statement predicting that surface winds in excess of 58 mph will occur by Thursday.

Kennedy Space Center is currently in a Hurricane Condition (HURCON) IV status as the agency continues to prioritize its employees in the Kennedy area

Hurricane Ian forced the agency to return SLS to Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building in order to protect it, while also giving engineers time to fix fuel leak issues that forced previous launch attempts to be scrubbed.

If the storm doesn't affect the launch attempt, Artemis 1 will send an uncrewed capsule to the moon. The Artemis program will try to create a sustainable human colony on the moon by the year 2030.
