An absolutely massive black hole has been discovered. According to The New York Times, it's ten times bigger than our Sun and is the closest planet ever found.

It's pretty remarkable that the next-nearest black hole ever found is about 3000 light years away from us.

Don't worry, you won't get at all NIMBY about the man. In a star system called GAIA BH1, it is currently sleeping. According to its discoverers, its existence might suggest that many other people are sleeping in the same star system.

The paper states that this is the nearest known black hole by a factor of three.

Sleeping Giant

According to the paper, El-Badry and his team first caught wind of the sleepy space demon in question by way of the European Space Agency's GAIA spacecraft. The researchers were able to tell that one of GAIA BH1's stars was moving, a sign that a powerful force might be nearby.

The team used the telescope to look at the speed and rhythm of the universe. Astronomers use the same technique to analyze the size of star-orbiting exoplanets, which causes a similar star wobble.

The idea that this system is home to a slumbering star-guzzler is supported by the calculations of the scientists. While this discovery might pose more questions than it answers in the short term, the researchers hope that this revelation leads to a number of similar findings.

It poses many questions about how this system was formed, as well as how many of the black holes there are out there.
