The cabins on Norwegian vessels are divided into four categories: windowless inside cabins, ocean view cabins, balcony cabins and suites.

Most of the cabins on newer Norwegian ships are balconies. The rush to add balcony cabins to ships has been spurred by the fact that cruiser will pay a significant premium to have a balcony with their cabin.

The newer vessels of Norwegian are known for a large number of suites.

A big percentage of the 2,040 cabins on the Norwegian Encore are suites. Only 7% of cabins are suites on Royal Caribbean's 3-year-old symphony of the seas. Only 3% of cabins on Carnival Cruise Line are suites.

The cabin types are typical for the line's newer ships.

There are 454 inside cabins. There are more than 100 ocean view cabins. There are 1,095 balcony cabins. There are 395 suites.

There are more suites on older Norwegian ships than on newer ones. The majority of the cabins on the Norwegian Spirit are balcony cabins.

Half of the cabins on Norwegianspirit are inside cabins and oceanview cabins. The cabins on that vessel are shown here.

There are 389 inside cabins. The number of ocean-view cabins is 173. The cabins are on the balcony There are 18 rooms in the suites.

Older Norwegian ships have a harder time locking down a suite than newer vessels. If you are planning to go on a cruise on one of the line's older vessels, you will want to book early to ensure you get a suite.

Multiple subcategories can be found within each of the four broad categories of cabins. There are 16 different types of suites at Norwegian Encore, from a Club Balcony Suite Guarantee that measures 249 square feet to The HavenDeluxe Owner's Suite with Large Balcony, which is six times that amount.

A modern look with clean lines and contemporary furniture is what Norwegian cabins have.

There are five destinations you can visit on a Norwegian ship.

Inside cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

When you have a tight budget, these cabins are where you stay. When booking a cabin on a Norwegian ship, you can often save a lot of money by booking an inside cabin instead of an ocean view cabin.

The ocean view is what you'll give up. There are four walls and no windows in your room, so you won't be able to see the outside world. It is possible to find an inside cabin with a window opening up onto a hallway, but the view will be nothing more than the hallway.

A small room is where you will be. The cabins on Norwegian Encore are small. The cabin on the vessel is about 160 square feet. The typical balcony cabin on Norwegian is 175 square feet.

Windowless cabins aren't so bad.

One type of inside cabin that Norwegian is well-known for is studio cabins designed for solo travelers.

The Norwegian Epic was the first ship to include such cabins. The line quickly added them to more vessels.

The solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are designed to maximize storage space and are clustered around an exclusive studio lounge with a bar and television area.

Norwegian has added solo cabin complexes with lounges on six more ships. The solo complex is spread over three decks.

The larger Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss have solo complexes with over 80 cabins. Norwegian Prima has 73 solo cabins.

Most of the time the studio cabins have windows that face the hallway.

Ocean-view cabins on Norwegian Cruise Line ships

A cabin with an ocean view has a window that looks out to the sea but not a balcony where you can sit and enjoy the fresh air.

Most of Norwegian's newer ships have relatively few cabins with balconies.

Ocean-view cabins on Norwegian ships are larger than inside cabins, but not as large as balcony cabins. Sometimes you can find ocean-view cabins that are larger than what you would find on a balcony. Sometimes there can be large but odd-shaped rooms with windows at the front of ships, where there is no balcony.

Several recent Norwegian vessels have large ocean-view cabins at their fronts. The Family Oceanview Stateroom has a large picture window and is marketed to families.

Large Balcony cabins measure 331 square feet and have huge balconies that measure 155 square feet. Unusually large balconies are offered by the ship, which measure up to 423 square feet.

There are many reasons to book a balcony cabin.

Special spa-themed balcony cabins can be found on a few ships. The rooms have tranquil decor, a luxury bathroom, easy access to the Mandara Spa on the ship, and free access to the ship's thermal spa suites.

Spa balcony cabins and spa mini-suites can be found on some ships.
