Bowing to criticism about surprise fees that potential guests encounter late in the booking process, Airbnb announced Monday that it will begin displaying the total price of a stay before taxes, but including its own fees and hosts' cleaning charges, at the very beginning of the search process.
In many parts of the world, the nightly rate is only shown if taxes and fees are not included. A five-night stay would initially cost $1,195 per night, but only on the next screen would guests learn of a $199 cleaning fee and an $871 service fee for a total cost of $7,044.
Guests have taken to social media in the past to complain that some hosts set high cleaning fees and that the nightly rate is not transparent.

New tools will be coming for hosts to help them establish more competitive pricing. Chesky said that hosts wanted their help to understand the final price guests pay and what price to charge to stay competitive.
