The relationship between Amazon and electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian is going well. In a post today, Amazon said that it has over 1,000 electric delivery vehicles in its fleet.
The EV startup Rivian was backed by Amazon in the beginning of the year. In July of this year, hundreds of Amazon branded Rivian trucks began rolling out in cities like Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis. According to Amazon, its electric vehicle force has surpassed 1,000 delivery trucks in over 100 U.S. cities.
It is essential to reach the world's zero-emissions goal. Rivian has a growth officer named Behl. To see our production ramp up is amazing. Our teams work hard to get thousands of electric delivery vehicles on the road. They are motivated by the feedback about the vehicle and the mission.
Amazon has 1,000+ Rivian vehicles, but they are just a small part of their delivery force. There are 30,000 Amazon trucks and 20,000 Amazon trailers that the company uses to get stuff to you. Amazon claimed in its post that it wants to increase its EV fleet to 100,000 vehicles by the year 2030. Modern Retail says that Amazon delivered 4.2 billion parcels in 2020 which is about 11 million a day. Even large corporations have to take small steps.
There are other retail giants that are moving towards electric delivery vehicles. Walmart and Canoo, an EV startup and Rivian rival, formed a partnership earlier this year to bring 4,500 of the startup's lifestyle delivery vehicles to Walmart. Walmart and Amazon are trying to improve their delivery efforts, but they fail to address the root cause of their climate impact, which is that they are based on excess consumption and maximalism.
