On his daughter's birthday, a man drove off a cliff and died. Phil Paxson stayed to help clean up after the party at which family and friends had gathered to celebrate his oldest daughter's birthday. Alycia left the party with their two girls.

Alycia said she remembered saying goodbye and seeing her in a bit.

What we know happened:

The family moved to a suburb. Even though the house was only a short drive away, Phil was still unfamiliar with the roads in the area so he used gps to navigate.

According to Phil's family, he was directed to a place where a small bridge was supposed to have been. The bridge hasn't been used in years. It was washed away a decade ago.

Visibility issues may have been caused by the weather that night. Phil fell into the ravine after driving off the cliff.

Preventing others from dying this way

Phil's family is trying to raise awareness about his death and the missing bridge. Proper maintenance of the bridge could have saved Phil's life.

Alycia said that it was preventable. It's an unbelievable thing. He didn't deserve to die this way, I can't believe it.

County/ State claims no responsibility

The state and the county are not to blame. They say that it is a private road.

The attorney representing Phil's family said that they had heard of babysitters or delivery drivers who had almost died the same way as Phil.

Phil was killed in a tragic accident and a barricade has been put up to make sure it doesn't happen again.

The man fell off the 300-foot cliff into the volcano.
