Why the Colts decided to move on from Frank Reich (1:05)

The Colts decided to fire Reich. Affirmative.

11:39 AM ET

The Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Frank Reich one day after the team's worst offensive performance in recent history.

The Colts have lost their last three games. Despite a recent quarterback change from Matt Ryan to Sam Ehlinger and last week's firing of offensive coordinator Marcus Brady, it was the latest example of their growing offensive challenges.

Reich was 40-33-1 in the regular season and 1-2 in the playoffs. The tenure was defined by constant turnover at the quarterback position as the Colts have struggled to find a replacement for Andrew Luck. Ryan was benched after seven starts and the tenure of the past two was ugly.

Indianapolis lost its final two games last season despite needing just one victory to make the playoffs. Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts, was displeased with the performance of the team in the finale, which resulted in a 26-11 loss to Jacksonville.

Not much different results were brought in the year 2022.

The Indianapolis Colts are in the worst shape of Reich's tenure on the offensive side of the ball. After Sunday's game, the long-time quarterback and Super Bowl-winning offensive line coach with the Eagles talked about how frustrated he was with the Colts' inability to score.

The offensive performance was the reason I was brought here. I'm responsible for that. The players are with us. The players are good enough. I have to work harder. I have to start on offense. He said that he needs to do a better job getting the guys ready to play, putting guys in a good position to win, and having answers when things go wrong.

There haven't been any answers lately.

The Colts failed to convert any of their 14 third-down tries, tying for the worst single-game mark in the past 30 years. The team's lowest output since 1997 was 121 yards, the lowest of Reich's tenure.

During his time in Indianapolis, Reich was able to bring the team back from the verge. The Colts have been slow early in the season, but have come back late in the season. The Colts made the playoffs despite starting the year 0-6. They went on to lose two of their three games last season.

The fate of the general manager who put the team together is unknown.
