There will be darkness on the face of the moon before it turns red. It is one of the most eye-catching sights in the sky.

In the United States, anyone will have a front-row seat as the sun, the Earth and the moon line up and cause the moon to pass through Earth's shadow.

According to Bruce Betts, the chief scientist at the Planetary Society, the most significant thing about a lunar eclipse is that it gives you a sense of three-dimensional geometry.

You need to know what to look for during the eclipse.

Observers on the west coast will get the best view. It was at 12:03 a.m. The moon will enter the outer part of Earth's shadow at a slight angle. The total phase of the eclipse won't start until 2 am. When the moon enters the dark part of Earth's shadow, it is known as totality. The moon will be visible for 90 minutes until 3:41 a.m. and by 5:56 a.m.

Andrew Fraknoi is an astronomer at the University of San Francisco. Many people are so nervous about Election Day this year that they might be up all night watching it.

The viewers on the East Coast will have to wake up early. Although they won't be able to see the whole eclipse, they can see the partial one. The moon sets for the most northeastern parts of the US at 6:41 a.m. The rubies moon can be seen from the northwestern horizon.

The moon will be red from 4:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 5:00 a.m. is the central time. One hour earlier, totality will occur for those in the Rockies.

Sky-watchers will be able to see the eclipse in East Asia and Australia after the moonrise. Further information can be found on NASA's visibility map.

It's safe to watch the eclipse with your eyes even if you're not in the path of the eclipse.

As the moon enters Earth's shadow, it may come as a surprise that it isn't dark. That is because the sun reflects the moon. While most of the sun is not visible during a lunar eclipse, some of it can be seen on the edges of our planet. The shorter, bluer wavelength can't hit the moon.

It is similar to seeing all the sunsets and sunrises on the Earth at one time.

It is vastly different from our ancestors. The disappearance of the moon was seen as a time of danger in many cultures.

The moon was thought to have been attacked by a jaguar during an eclipse by the Inka. The Mesopotamians thought it was an attack on their king. The demon swallowed the moon.

The nickname "blood moon" came from the fact that not all lunar eclipses result in a deep red moon. The colors of an eclipse can vary from day to day. The majority of it is dependent on particles in the atmosphere. The red colors of a sunset can be deepened by wildfire smoke or volcanic dust. If the atmosphere is clear during a lunar eclipse, there will be more light in the sky which will cause a red moon.
