The National Park Service is marking Veteran's Day with a final free entrance day in 2022.

All national parks will be free of charge on November 11th.

Veterans, Gold Star Families, and U.S. citizens with permanent disabilities will all be granted free entrance to the park. Each year, the park service waives entrance fees on certain days.

With fall foliage in full swing in many places and a long list of parks to choose from, there is a good chance you will be able to visit one later this week.

If you visit a national park on one of the National Park Service's free entry days, you can save up to $35 per vehicle.

Reservations are required for some of the country's most visited parks. Reservations can be made for those parks here.

If you're going to visit on one of the fee-free days, it's a good idea to avoid Olympic National Park and Acadia National Park, both of which are busy.

National parks and monuments are some of the best places to visit.

It takes 2.5 hours by car from Reno, Nevada, and less than four hours from San Francisco to get to this national park. Lassen Volcanic National Park is a place where you can see steaming fumaroles, catch a rainbow trout or swim in a mountain lake.

Manzanita Lake is a great place to kayak or fish. You can access the beach from the main park highway.

Dinosaur National Monument, Utah

It's a good idea to go to a national monument instead of a national park. The Dinosaur National Monument in Jessen, Utah, is a place where the giant beasts used to roam.

You can get there by car from Salt Lake City and Denver. In addition to seeing prehistoric dinosaur remains embedded in rocks and petroglyphs, you can go rafting through lonely canyons along the Green and Yampa rivers within the park. If you want to avoid the river during the winter, the Quarry Visitor Center is a good place to go.

Wind Cave National Park is located in the southwestern part of the state. It is one of the few national parks that does not charge an entry fee.

One of the most complex caves in the world is located in the park. You can feel the air pressure system at its entrance. There are plenty of hiking trails to enjoy if that sounds too claustrophobic.

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Visitors from Minnesota and Michigan can take ferries and seaplanes to the national park. On most days, there are more animals in Isle Royale National Park than there are people.

You can explore via a day hike on a short visit or stay longer to paddle miles of waterways within the park.

Bottom line

With all national parks waiving entrance fees this Friday, it's a good time to plan your visit. The list of participating parks and national monuments can be found here.

We will be sure to update this if you want to take advantage of a future free entry day at one of the nation's 423NPS sites.
