After not apologizing to West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin for promising a San Diego audience to replace coal fired power plants with wind farms, President Joe Biden promised a New York audience to shut down drilling for oil.
The President responded to a shouted question from an audience member about his longstanding promises to shut down drilling on federal lands and waters by saying "no more drilling... there is no more drilling..."
There have been new drilling in federal lands and waters in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico during Biden's presidency. We are trying to make that happen.
Even though a U.S. president can be excused for not knowing everything, neither response was accurate. The Biden administration has not only approved more drilling for oil and gas on federal lands and waters, it has boasted about how many new permits it has issued for such operations whenever the moment was convenient for its purposes.
The President's responses to these questions betray his mindset on the matter, which he has expressed repeatedly from the beginning of his presidential campaign in mid 2019. The regulatory agenda of the Biden administration wants to restrict and eliminate drilling for oil and natural gas in the United States.
Biden is not afraid to criticize oil companies for not drilling enough wells whenever he feels like it. On October 31, the President threatened to impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies if they didn't increase their drilling pace. Within a few days of Energy Secretary Granholm reaching out to refining companies, she made a series of calls promising to work with them to increase their output of diesel fuel.
It should come as no surprise that executives at these companies often suffer from whiplash.
The American people are losing trust in President Biden because of his attacks on the coal industry, according to Senator Manchin.
The President made Manchin's point a day later in his attack on the oil industry. It would be amusing if the constant confusion and upset caused by this rudderless administration weren't so bad.
