The French audio company best known for its line of eye-catching audio gear that looks like helmets is branching out into the portable smart speaker business. The company is announcing a battery-powered speaker that has the company's signature sci-fi stylings but is in a compact form factor that it says has 10 hours of battery life.

Four full-range drivers and two sub-woofers are included in the Mania. The speaker adjusts its sound profile based on the amount of listening space it has. The speaker's two rear drivers will adjust their sound to "rein force" the front two drivers.

The speaker supports both wired and wireless connections. There is built-in Amazon for voice commands. It has an IPX4 rating for dust and water resistance, which should mean it will survive a light splash of water, but no claims are made about it being protected from solid particles. There is a docking station that can be used separately.

The Devialet mania will be on sale from today for $790 If it sounds like the company's recently released soundbar, then that could justify the hefty premium over other similarly portable smart speakers. The portable Roam speaker retails for $179 and has a choice of two voice assistants.
