Sri Lanka suspend Danushka Gunathilaka after rape charge at T20 World Cup in Australia

Gunathilaka was accused of raping a woman in Australia.

While at the T20 World Cup in Australia, Gunathilaka has been charged with sexual intercourse without consent.

He was denied bail a second time on Monday.

Sri Lanka Cricket said Gunathilaka, who was arrested around 01:00 local time on Sunday, had been suspended "from all cricket with immediate effect".

If the player is found guilty in the court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize him.

All the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident will be provided by Sri Lanka Cricket.

He is accused of sexually assault a 29-year-old woman.

Hours after the final game of the World Cup, police arrested a man.

Gunathilaka missed the rest of the tournament with an injury he sustained in the first game. He was with the team in Australia.

He met the woman after communicating with her for a number of days on a dating app.
