The Edwin Diaz deal, which @bnightengale reported, is the first nine-figure contract ever for a closer and for the first time takes the position into the $20 million-plus range. A huge number — and the Mets get a top priority locked up before full free agency starts on Thursday.

In July, Daz told reporters that he wanted to stay with the Mets for a long time.

"I would love to stay here if they gave me the chance," Daz said. New York is a good place for my family to call home. I'm happy with the team. I enjoy working with my teammates.

I hope I can stay here.

Daz was selected to the All-Star game for the second time in his career after posting a 1.31 earned run average, 0.839 WHIP and 118 strikeouts in 61 appearances for the Mets. It was his best season in baseball, with 32 saves.

The Mets finished tied for 1st in the NL East with a 101-61 record, but only earned a wild-card spot because of Daz's help.

The Mets fell to the Padres in the wild-card round.

The Puerto Rican finished fifth in the voting for theRookie of the Year when he was a member of the SeattleMariners. He spent three seasons in Seattle, and his best year was in 2018, when he posted a 1.96 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 73 games.

He won the American League Reliever of the Year award after finishing 18th in the voting for the Most Valuable Player.

The Mets acquired Daz and Robinson Can in December of last year.

The trade has paid dividends for the franchise and now it will only happen with Daz locked up.
