Aston Villa
Aston Villa had not beaten Manchester United at home in the league for 27 years

It was a dream debut for Unai Emery, the new manager of Villa Park, as he defeated Manchester United.

The hosts hadn't beaten United at home in the league since 1995 and were up 2-0 after 11 minutes.

Leon Bailey opened the scoring with a low shot after breaking clear of the defence.

Just three minutes later, Lucas Digne curled in a brilliant free- kick from 25 yards.

The Manchester United players looked stunned by Villa's fast start and did not register a meaningful effort until midway through the first half.

The away side improved before the half-time break as the away side named captain for the first time in ten Hag's tenure.

A huge slice of fortune got them a goal back seconds before the break when Jacob Ramsey's shot went in the back of the net.

Ramsey gave the perfect response after the break when he latched onto Watkins' ball and fired a shot past De Gea.

Villa fans spent the rest of the game celebrating the start of the Emery era and there was no way back for Manchester United.

The win moved Villa up to 13th place, three points above the bottom of the table.

Emery's immediate impact

Steven Gerrard paid the price for a poor start to the season, but Villa immediately brought in his replacement.

Emery was welcomed by Villa fans after he was appointed. There was a positive atmosphere around Villa Park before the game, and Emery was loudly cheered as he took his place in the dug out.

When Villa made the best start, the cheers had barely stopped.

The impact of Emery's team was immediately apparent as they played with a fast paced and dynamic style.

The Spaniard kicked every ball as he gave instructions on the touchline. If this is a sign of things to come for Villa, it will be soon.

Ronaldo captaincy return doesn't go as planned

Before kick-off, eyebrows were raised when it was announced thatRonaldo would be the new captain less than three weeks after walking out of Old United.

That appeared to be the end of his time at the club, but he has been slowly reintroduced by Ten Hag, who challenged the Portugal international to lead by example.

No Manchester United player covered themselves in glory in their terrible start to the game, despite the fact thatRonaldo was not as important as his manager would have liked.

The United captain was angry when he had the chance to score from a trademark free-kick but slammed it into a wall.

There were boos for the veteran forward as he threw his hands into the air after being called for a foul in the last minute of the game.
