Accidents that lead to deaths are extremely rare in commercial aviation. Today is an exception.

Turboprop crashes in Tanzania with fatalities

There was a Precision Air ATR 42-500 that crashed in Africa. The largest privately owned airline in the country is Precision Air, which is partially owned by the government. The airline has a fleet of 10 aircraft, including the two ATR 42 and 72 planes.

There was an incident on a flight from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba. There were two flights, the first one covering 509 miles and the second one covering 112 miles. There were 43 people on the plane, of which 39 were passengers and four were crew.

The biggest lake in Africa is Lake Victoria. The plane came to a stop close to the threshold. It is unclear if the plane missed the approach or overran the runway. There is a runway at the airport.

The route this Precision Air route was operating

The registration code for this flight was 5H-PWF. This plane was named "Bukoba" because it was where it crashed.

Details are limited as there was no tracking. The weather in the area wasn't great. I think it's too early to praise the airline for doing a great job with this landing, as the below is a very bad take.

Big difference between an ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY LANDING. Landing on water is part of the SAFETY measures pilots are trained and prepared to take when an aircraft develops some complications that ordinarily would be too risky to attempt a NORMAL landing. Well done, Precision Air. pic.twitter.com/ZMkoHhlw83

Complicated rescue efforts are ongoing

Fishermen and rescue workers have been trying to save passengers since the Precision Air ATR 42-500 crashed a few hundred feet from land.

The officials have been trying to get people off the plane, as well as trying to get the plane out of the water. The tail was the only part of the body that wasn't submerged. The plane is not completely submerged thanks to the rescue efforts.

At least 26 people have been rescued and sadly three bodies have been recovered. There are many people who are not accounted for. The two pilots were trapped in the cockpit but were still in contact with officials. I think that means the cabin was not submerged.

My thoughts are with the people on board and their families.

Bottom line

Bad weather is believed to have caused the crash of the Precision Air ATR 42. The plane was close to the airport but ended up in the water.

There are three confirmed deaths and 26 confirmed rescues. Rescue efforts are still going on with 43 people on the plane.

Aviation is so safe that events like this remind us of how things can go wrong.
