The Brooklyn Nets suspended guard Kyrie Irving for at least five games without pay for detrimental conduct to the team after he promoted an antisemitic film on social media and refused to say that he did not have antisemitic beliefs.
Irving must complete a series of objectives that address the harmful impact of his conduct before he could return, according to the Nets.
Brooklyn did not make those measures known to the public.
"For Irving to return, he needs to meet with the media and issue a verbal apology that clearly states he's sorry for sharing the film and understands the film is harmful and untrue."
He needs to apologize on his social media accounts as well. Hours after his suspension, Irving apologized on his social media accounts.
He must meet with Jewish leaders in the Brooklyn community as well as follow and complete sensitivity trainings.
The last of Irving's four-year deal he signed with the Nets in 2019: if he meets the numerous requirements to the Nets' satisfaction, he must meet with ownership and demonstrate this type of behavior won't happen again this season.
One of the action items Irving has to complete is a $500,000 donation to anti- hate causes.
Shams Charania @ShamsCharaniaSources: Nets have delivered Kyrie Irving six items he must complete to return to team: - Apologize/condemn movie- $500K donation to anti-hate causes- Sensitivity training- Antisemitic training- Meet with ADL, Jewish leaders
- Meet with Joe Tsai to demonstrate understanding
Irving apologized to the Jewish community on Thursday night, saying that he took full accountability for his actions. He deleted the offending message.
Sean Marks said that the apology was a step in the right direction, and that the team never considered waiving Irving before suspending him.
The Anti-Defamation League wouldn't accept the $500,000 donation from Irving and the Nets because of the press conference that happened before the suspension.
After watching the debacle of a press conference, it's clear that Kyrie feels no accountability for his actions. The ADL can't accept his donation.
Brooklyn won its first game without Irving on Friday, defeating the Wizards 128-96.
The next four games are against the Hornets, Mavericks, Knicks and Clippers. Irving could possibly play at the Los Angeles Lakers on November 13th.
