Georgia might not have been the top ranked team in the first College Football Playoff rankings, but that didn't stop them from leaving no doubt who is the best.

Their 27-13 win over Tennessee was about as thorough as it can get. The Georgia defense held Tennessee's high- scoring offense without a touchdown until the last minutes of the game.

3 in the initialCFP rankings, dominated the line of scrimmage, as Bennett had plenty of time to throw and hit deep shots down the field. The Vols didn't have an answer for Georgia's defense. Tennessee came into the game leading the nation in scoring, but was forced to punt three times in the first quarter. The previous eight games saw 18 punts.

It was that kind of afternoon for the Vols, who lost their sixth game in a row and were bullied physically after scoring 92 points in wins over ranked opponents.

Georgia put itself in a good position to make the College Football Playoff even if it lost in the SEC Championship game because of its commanding lead in the SEC Eastern Division.

Georgia has allowed just eight touchdown in nine games, and Tennessee was never able to get on track against them. A year ago, the national championship defense gave up 16 touchdown in 15 games.

The Tennessee team was greeted with chants of "overrated" by the Georgia student section in the third quarter as the rain began to fall. It was the most hostile environment the Vols have faced all season. They were rattled by the crowd noise. The Vols were flagged for back-to-back false starts in the first half after moving inside the 10-yard line and had to settle for a field goal.

The Georgia defense played without its best pass-rusher, Nolan Smith, who is out for the season after tearing a pectoral muscle, and Tennessee's deep passing game wasn't very effective. Hendon Hooker was never allowed to find any rhythm by the bulldogs.

Hooker didn't throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 20 games, but he did finish with a season-high 33 completions.

Hooker was sacked six times in the first half. He was under a lot of pressure for a long time. After being hit hard in the final minutes, he got up slowly and left the field.

17 yards was the longest pass play of the game. They had 36 plays from scrimmage of at least 30 yards.

Georgia was able to keep the ball away from Tennessee's offense with long drives. Bennett wasn't fired many times.
