Alvechurch player celebrates
Alvechurch belied the 96-place gap between themselves and Cheltenham Town to win 2-1 at the League One club

The magic of the FA Cup begins on the first weekend in November when the non-league sides compete against the full-time professionals from League One and Two.

There were a number of upsets as underdogs beat higher ranked opponents.

Some of Saturday's biggest FA Cup first round shocks were looked at by the British Broadcasting Corporation.

96-place gap? No problem

The lowest ranked side left in the competition is always the focus of everyone's attention, and this year it was Alvechurch.

The Southern premier division central strugglers faced the toughest test of their lives when they went up against a League One side.

In a win at Whaddon Road, Danny Waldron scored both of his goals.

It's something you watch when you're young, but to score two goals in the first round of the FA Cup is something that rarely happens.

I'm looking forward to the next round and I feel great right now.

About 1,500 fans were taken to their League One opponents.

We've played in front of a lot of people, but this is the largest crowd we've played in front of.

They gave us a big boost today.

"It's definitely my highest moment, the best that I've done so far, so it's a proud accomplishment and we'll see what happens next round now."

For every winner there has to be a loser, and the defeat heaped more pressure on WadeElliott.

It was the second time this season that he had seen his side lose in the first round of a cup competition.

You have to congratulate Alvechurch. He told the radio station that anything he says will sound like he's trying to detract from them.

Cashing in their Chips

In the National League South, Chippenham Town beat Lincoln City.

Joe Hanks was the hero as his goal just before half-time saw a side one point off the danger zone in the sixth tier.

If they win in round two of the FA Cup, they will earn more than double the prize money they have earned so far.

Neil Blackmore said that the FA Cup money is never budget for because you never know what you're going to win.

"To win anything at all is a bonus, so to win $41,000 today is absolutely amazing."

"This is an older club and quite expensive to run, these floodlights cost us a fortune the way energy prices are so there's lots of things to spend it on, so it's going to be a massive, massive help to us."

'Fantastic day' for Farnborough

Michael Fernandes scores
Michael Fernandes was mobbed by Farnborough fans after his goal in the 86th minute saw the non-league side take the lead at Sutton United

Like Chippenham, they are in the hat for round two of the playoffs after a 2-0 win at League Two side Sutton United.

They extended their winning streak to six matches with two late goals from Michael and Francis.

Their manager said it was a great day.

You have to enjoy these moments when you've been in football for a long time.

'We didn't come to kick them off the pitch'

King's Lynn Town are flying at the top end of National League North and showed why as they won a close game against Doncaster Rovers.

Tommy Widdrington is the club's manager and he says that the style of the club suits him.

He told the radio station that they tried to play football and that they were allowed to do that.

"We had to put our 'A' game out there and I think that was as good a performance as we've had for a while, and there's not a better time than to do it on a stage like this."

I hope they get a plum draw in the next round, because I think they deserve it.

Weymouth get replay

Akheem Rose scores
Ahkeem Rose's free-kick secured a replay for National League South strugglers Weymouth

The FA Cup balls are light and if we get a free- kick, I just struck it straight through it.

Ahkeem Rose's free-kick earned a draw and replay against Wimbledon.

One of the better performances was the result.

The National League side won over Northampton Town by a single point, while the League One side beat Argyle by five points.

Sometimes the FA Cup form book does not lie, as evidenced by the fact that the National League South side were whitewashed by the Dons.
