It's going through some turmoil right now. Advertisers and popular users have left the app in droves since the new chief twit took over. Many alternatives have stepped up to replace the popular app. CounterSocial, B-Heard, and Cohost are some of the apps that offer new, safer places for users afraid of what "free speech" looks like.
The app is called Mastodon. Mastodon is more of a strip mall than a festival. It's difficult to sign up for the platform because you have to choose a specific server to begin with, and you can even create your own.
It's easy to get an account on Mastodon. The app asks users to pick a server that they would like to join. Although Mastodon has been around for six years, the user base is small, with around 600,000 active users. The server can be a hobby or work related.
