Climate activists swarmed a private jet section of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport on Saturday as part of a day of demonstrations.
The activists sat in front of the planes' wheels to stop them from taking off. There were no delays as of early afternoon. According to the organizations, the demonstrations were held to protest the aviation industry's pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
In the main hall of the airport, demonstrators carried signs with slogans like "Restrict Aviation" and " More Trains". The military police said in a statement that they had taken several people into custody.
We have been campaigning to stop the pollution at Schiphol for a long time. The airport is building a brand new terminal rather than reducing its flight movements. The wealthy elite are using more private jets, which is the most polluted way to fly.
According to the environmental group, Schiphol is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the country. The airport supports targets for the entire industry to reach net zero emissions by the year 2050, in response to the climate demonstrations.
The CEO of Schiphol said in a statement that he has been committed to a sustainable Netherlands for 25 years.
We need to do everything we can to become cleaner and quieter. That is what I think. He said that the task was immense but doable. Sondag plans to talk to a lot of people in the next few days.
He told them to be welcome but to keep it clean.
Private jet traffic may be included in the Dutch government's climate policy, according to reports. In June, the government decided to cap the number of passengers at the airport at 440,000.
