He was laid off while sleeping and woke up on Friday with no access to his email or laptop.

Jaseem Abid realized that his laptop had been wiped after he was fired.

The staff was told in a memo on Thursday that they would be told on Friday if they were laid off. Musk said that he had no choice but to axe half of the workforce.

Abid worked at the London office and only joined in April this year as a senior software engineer, according to his LinkedIn profile. He later added: "To confirm, I eventually got that template email but what an awful way to go through this process."

They did not reply to Insider's request.

Some staff found out when they realized they had been locked out of their email and laptop that they were fired by email.

A woman who is eight months pregnant said that her work laptop was cut off on Thursday night.

After the memo was sent to staff, a class-action lawsuit was filed, claiming that the layoffs violated California and federal employment law. The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco federal court.
