Russia has failed to destroy a single HIMARS launcher to date, but Ukraine still needs more artillery: report

The US gave the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems to the Ukrainians.

The long-range, high-precision rocket launchers have proven monumental to the war effort against Russia. The rockets have a range of up to 50 miles and have been used to hit Russian positions.

According to a senior Defense Department official, Russia has failed to destroy a single weapon since Ukraine started using them.

The impact of the weapon system on the fighting in Ukranian has been greater than any other weapon system.

An additional 18 systems, as well as the associated ammunition, were added to the US security assistance package.

A land-warfare expert told Insider last month that Russia's failure to do so is likely due to military incompetence and outdated infrastructure.

In July, a military expert told Insider that the HIMARS were a perfect weapon for the Ukrainians because they exploited Russia's poor war planning. The weapons are the right system at the right time, according to William Alberque, director of strategy, technology, and arms control.

According to a defense official, Ukraine still needs more weapons for the fight. The outlet reported that Ukraine is firing anywhere from 4,000 to 7,000 rounds per day.

With winter on the way, updated infrastructure will be needed in the Kherson region. The Czech Republic will be getting 45 Soviet-era T 72 tanks upgraded by the Pentagon.

The updates are part of an additional $400 million in military aid the Biden administration announced this week.

According to a defense press release, the US has committed more than $18.9 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
