Four championship banners were hung from the Detroit Lions indoor practice facility on Friday as the team worked to snap a five-game losing skid on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers
Since 1957, the Lions haven't celebrated a title, the second-longest in the league. They have not won a playoff game in 22 years.
There have been many dramatic losses and lack of success through the years, which has caused some to wonder if the curse of Bobby Layne still exists.
The Lions dominated the decade in the 50's. Detroit won the NFL titles in 1952 and 1953 with Layne at quarterback.
The squad was able to win the 1957 title despite Layne's broken leg. Earl Morrall and two draft picks were traded by George Wilson to the PittsburghSteelers in the second game of the 1959 season.
The Lions weren't going to win a title for another 50 years. The franchise has not been able to win again.
On a recent episode of "Peyton's Places," Manning talked about the curse of Bobby Layne. Manning was joined by two die-hard Lions fans as they tried to get rid of the curse.
Dan Campbell doesn't believe that they're jinxed in Detroit.
Manning got to the heart of football history through conversations with former players, coaches and key figures. You can watch on the internet.
I do not. I don't I'm not able to go there. Campbell said during Friday's practice that he wouldn't allow himself to go there because he felt like for him. You create your own vibe. I don't think you become what you become if you buy into the idea of creating your own energy and believing that.
Although he is a Michigan native and attended the University of Michigan, he wasn't aware of the curse until recently. "Hopefully we can break that someday soon," said Detroit's No. 2 overall pick.
It's a good chance. Hutchinson said that he hoped that Peyton would exorcise it. We should be able to move on now. It will be great if we can start winning ballgames now that we have a new quarterback.
Campbell said he didn't watch the episode because they were writing a new narrative.
It has to be the case. Daniels said there was a curse on the show. We have to accept the fact that we are bad if you remove the curse. It is easier for die-hard Lions fans to say "yes, there is a curse." We hit bottom, and then we hit bottom again, and then we hit bottom again, and then we hit bottom again.
There is hope in the dark depths of my Lions fan's soul.
