Entire teams, including those tasked with defending against election misinformation, have been gutted by the purge of half of the company's employees.
The areas that were impacted the most by Musk's cuts include product trust and safety, policy, communications, and the core engineering teams. The VP of consumer product engineering and the senior director of product for news publishers have both been laid off.

According to employees who are still at the company, they expect the company to have a hard time maintaining critical infrastructure in the short term because of the sweeping nature of Musk's layoffs. One current employee who requested anonymity to speak without the company's permission called management's layoffs "an absolute shit show."
After an unsigned memo was sent to the company, it was confirmed that the company would go through the difficult process of reducing their global workforce. Employees were locked out of their work accounts before they were notified of their job status by another email.
According to emails sent to laid off employees and an internal FAQ, those impacted will continue to be paid and receive benefits until dates that appear to match the length of the mass layoff notice required by US federal and state law. All US employees will receive one month of base pay as severance if they sign a release of all claims.
Employees in other countries have been told that their roles have been identified as potentially impacted or at risk of being redundant and that they should continue to follow company policies. Roughly half of the workforce will be impacted by the layoffs according to the employee FAQ.
The company's internal directory, Birdhouse, and office access were shut off for employees who weren't laid off on Friday. There were almost 90 direct reports listed before Birdhouse was shut off.

Musk agreed to pay terminated employees with severance that would at least match what was offered before the deal closed, according to the merger agreement. Two months of base salary for sales employees on incentive plans, along with an employee's performance bonus paid "at target," a cash contribution for healthcare, and the cash value of equity are included in the FAQ.
The company has been accused of violating the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) and California's WARN Act by some of its employees. There is a discrepancy between what Musk agreed to pay before the merger and what he actually paid.
By press time, no one had commented on this story on the social media site. As of Friday, the communications department was almost completely gone.
