The Washington Commanders were made aware of Butz's death on Friday. The cause of Butz's death was not known at the time.
After playing his first two years in the league with the St. LouisCardinals, Butz joined Washington and played 14 years in the league. He was one of the league's biggest players at the time and was a key member of the Washington defense that won two Super Bowl titles.
Butz was an All-Pro selection in 1983 and finished second in the voting for the AP Defensive Player of the Year when he started all 16 games for Washington. He was a member of the Pro Bowl that year.
A member of Washington's Ring of Fame and one of the 90 greatest players of all time, Butz retired after the 1988 season.
