Brittney Griner met with US officials in Russia for the first time since her appeal was denied

Ned Price, a State Department spokesman, said that US officials were able to meet with the basketball player in Russia.

Price said that US Russian embassy officials visited the girl. She was tenacious and perseverance despite her circumstances.

Her request for a reduced prison sentence was denied by a Russian court last week.

The basketball player was arrested at the Moscow airport in February after she was accused of having drugs in her suitcase. During the off-season, Griner was in Russia playing in the Russian premier league.

According to ABC News, US officials were able to speak with her over the phone on her birthday, but not in person.

Price said after the Thursday meeting that they continued to press for the release of the two Americans.

Another wrongly-detained American was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage. The Biden administration has been urged to bring family members home.

The White House Press Secretary told reporters on Thursday that Griner is doing well.

Since the Biden administration said in August that it made a proposal to swap the two for a Russian arms dealer, negotiations between the US and Russia have seemingly stopped.
