A few weeks ago, journalist, author of Platformer, and former Verge reporter,CaseyNewton, sent out a message that had many readers laughing and panicking: that David Sacks' calendar at Twitter was not set to private and, as a result, was being carefully scrutinized by the employees

It is funny in a way that makes you laugh. The next thought of most people will be, "Is my calendar public?"

If you are one of those people, here is how to make sure your calendar is not public.

Privacy controls for entire calendars are only available on the web app, even though you can choose to share or not.

Make sure your calendar is not public

One of the first things you should do is make sure that you don't check the box that makes your calendar available to everyone.

Google calendar with pop-out showing “Settings and sharing” menu selection.
Choose which calendar you’re checking, and select “Settings and sharing.”

The My Calendars section is located in the left-hand column. Click on the three dots that appear to the right of the calendar name when you hover over it. You can click on settings and share it. Make available to public is not checked if you click on access permission in the left column.

If your account is administered by your employer or an organization, there is a chance that you will have additional options, such as making your calendar visible to your colleagues without it being completely public.

Make sure “Make available to public” is not checked. You can use the blue “Add people” box below that to give access to specific people.

Sharing your calendars

This doesn't mean you can't share your calendar with people. If you want to share it with someone special, you can do it in the same section.

Click on Share with specific people in the left column if you want to add them. You can either type in a new email or choose from a list of contacts. If you want, you can add more than one email address.

Settings for Google Calendar with pop-up box showing permissions to share with specific people.
You can choose how you want to share your calendar with specific people.

You can click on the Permissions drop down. You can either allow the person to see all of the details of the event or allow them to make changes to it. You can only allow them to see if you are busy at certain times. You can click to send.

When you share a calendar with someone, they will get an email with a link to add the calendar to their own calendar app.

If you change your mind about sharing with someone, you can go back to the Share with specific people section. To change their permission, click the drop-down menu, or click the X to the right of the drop-down.
