The White House said Thursday that more than 26 million Americans have applied for student loan forgiveness.
More than forty million Americans who are eligible for debt relief have already applied.
The White House expects to approve 16 million applications by the end of the week for individual borrowers to have up to $20,000 of their debt forgiven.
After an appeals court halted the program last month, borrowers won't have their debt forgiven immediately.
Biden criticized the legal attempts to deny student loan relief to Americans in a post on Thursday.
The plan for widespread student loan forgiveness has been jeopardized by a number of lawsuits. Less than two weeks ago the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to block the program because it could force borrowers to pay a higher state tax rate. A coalition of six states–all led by Republicans–filed a lawsuit arguing that forgiveness could hurt their tax revenue and a judge temporarily paused the debt relief. The Supreme Court refused to block the loan forgiveness program after the taxpayers association in Wisconsin asked them to do so.

In August, Biden announced a student loan relief plan that would allow $10,000 in loan cancellation for all federal borrowers who make less than $125,000 a year.
