  • 16 million student loan borrowers have been approved for debt relief by the Education Department.

  • The GOP group stopped them from getting relief in the next few days.

  • Until the 8th Circuit makes a decision on the legality of the relief, the relief is on hold.

A group of Republicans are trying to prevent debt relief for millions of student-loan borrowers.

As of this week, the Education Department will have approved 16 million of the 26 million student-loan borrowers who have applied for debt relief through the online form at studentaid.gov.

The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily paused the relief in response to a lawsuit filed by six Republican-led states who argued the policy would hurt their states' tax revenues.

Biden said that 16 million Americans should see student debt relief in the coming days. Relief is on hold because Republicans are doing everything they can to deny it.

Republican elected officials are attacking us in the courts. I will not apologize for helping the working class as they recover from the swine flu.

Biden's debt relief plan has been the target of several lawsuits. The cases have either been dismissed or appealed, but the court hasn't officially struck down the entire plan. The Education Department can't give relief until the 8th Circuit makes a decision.

Depending on how long it will take for loan companies to process the changes to borrowers' accounts, borrowers may have to resume their payments in January.

Justice Amy ConeyBarrett dismissed one of the lawsuits on October 20 and the other one appeared on Tuesday.

The GOP's defense may have been weakened this week when the Justice Department told the court that it wasn't involved in the state's decision to file a lawsuit.
