  • Putin hasn't decided if he's going to run for president.

  • The Times of London reported that Western officials thought the war had weakened his position.

  • A Russia expert told Insider that Putin keeps people guessing.

Putin hasn't decided if he'll run in Russia's presidential election in 2024, according to his top spokesman. An expert in Russian politics said that it is a standard move for him.

The one-word answer "No" was given by Peskov to the reporter's question.

Putin is eligible for two more six-year terms as president because of a law he enacted in 2021. He has been the country's leader for 21 years.

Putin's law made it harder for him to hold onto power. Russia is one of the lowest ranked countries for electoral freedom by the Freedom House.

The Times of London reported that unnamed western officials said that the war in Ukraine made Russians think about a challenge to Putin in four years.

The paper cited an official as saying that people are thinking about a life beyond Putin. There is no chance of change in Russia in the near future. The middle of this decade is beginning to be interesting.

An official told the paper that the decision to invade was made by Putin. The officials said that the error made him weak.

Dr Sarah Whitmore, a specialist in Russian and Ukrainian politics at the UK's Oxford Brookes University, told Insider that she wasn't sure whether the mood would sour after the failures in Ukraine.

She pointed out that most Russians get most of their information from state TV. The narrative is that Russia's security is in danger.

She said that Putin is the only one who protects them. Everyone else has been left out of the political scene.

She said that Putin usually stays quiet about his next moves.

She showed how Putin waited until the last minute to announce his candidacy in the 2012 election. The groups around Putin were kept off balance because of it.

She believes that Putin doesn't know if he will run. She said that he might be thinking about whether he can leave if his health deteriorated.

It wouldn't make sense to say that at the moment, because it would start a power struggle.

Peskov told reporters to "Ask him himself" when asked the same question in July.
