Five hundred light-equipped drones are being launched into the sky above New York City tonight to form a giant flying advertisement for a mobile game.
The 10-minute long choreographed performance will turn the sky into the largest screen on the planet for the game's 10th anniversary.
The drones will be launched from across the Hudson River in New Jersey but will not be visible in NYC due to the city's Avigation laws. There are restrictions on flying drones at New Jersey state parks. This isn't the first drone light show in the area, with a similar performance for the NBA draft in June this year.
A flying advertisement turning the sky into a billboard has angered some of the city's residents. Brad Hoylman is a state senator. It is offensive to New Yorkers, it is offensive to public safety, and it is offensive to wildlife.
There are concerns about the impact of the light show on birds. The Hudson is an important flyway for birds and it has been dark. The impact on the environment and the birds that will be flying in the same air space as those drones is surprising.
