As the Middle East prepares to host the next two major world summits on climate change, the spotlight is shifting towards the region. The next United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on 6 November, and the next United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) will be held in Abu Dhabi, the United States of America.
According to a report published by UN Climate Change this week, Egypt and the U.S. are two of 26 countries that have updated their climate targets in line with promises made last year. The commitment to further cut greenhouse-gas emissions from electricity, transport and the oil and gas sectors is contingent on receiving international financial support. The United Arab Emirates is promising to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by a third by the year 2030.
