Four people were injured on Thursday, but no one was killed, according to members of his party.
An aide said he was not in danger, but it was not clear if he had been hit in the foot or leg.
Mr Khan led a march to demand snap elections after he was ousted.
A senior aide said that this was an attempt to kill him. A male suspect was arrested.
Pakistan's election commission disqualified Mr Khan from holding public office after he was accused of being a political player.
He had been accused of making false statements about gifts and proceeds from their sale. The gifts included watches and a ring.
