A number of new features were added to the popular messaging app today.

The goal of Communities is to allow people to bring together separate groups under a single umbrella, and then organize smaller discussion groups on important topics.

An example use case would be the creation of an overarching "School" community, which breaks out into smaller groups based on grades and other factors. Communities were first tested in April and are gradually rolling out around the world.

In-chat polls have been a feature of the platform since March. Group members can choose from pre-defined answers when asked a poll question. Polls are end-to-end secure and only people in the group can see the results.

Video calls can now have up to 32 participants and the group size has been doubled.

Over the last few years,WhatsApp has worked to improve the group chat experience, introducing group descriptions, a catch-up feature, a one-way messaging option, and protection for users who are being added to groups multiple times.
