At the Matter launch event in Amsterdam, Aqara revealed its smart home plan. The Hub M2 will get a free software update in December to make it compatible with Matter. The release of Aqara's first two Matter-over-Thread devices and a new multi-protocol hub will follow in the next few years.
In December, the maker of low-cost smart home devices will issue an over-the-air update to the Aqara Hub M2 to make over 40 of their devices compatible with the hub. More than 160 of the company's devices will be supported by that list. The Hub M1S/M1S Gen 2, Hub E1, Camera Hub G3 and Camera Hub G2H Pro will be Matter compatible in the following months.
Any Aqara device attached to the M2 can be used in Matter. Ikea is going to make Matter compliant with an update to the Dirigera hub coming early next year. Hubs will still be required on Matter networks for anyone who has already invested in a lot of Zigbee devices, because it is the fastest way to Matter compatibility.
A common language for smart home devices to communicate in your home without relying on a cloud connection is provided by Matter. At launch, it will include smart sensors, smart lighting, smart plugs and switches, smart thermostats, connected locks, and media devices.
If you buy a smart home device that has the Matter logo on it, you should be able to use it with any Matter compatible device and platform. Devices compatible with matter should be available by the end of the year.
We expect to see updates on the smart home platforms that are signed on to support Matter over the next few months.
Aqara announced more details on its first Matter-over-Thread devices at the beginning of the year. The Motion and Light Sensor P2 will be released in early 2023. Aqara will eventually release an array of new Thread-based devices.
The Hub M3 is a smart home hub with multi-protocol support. The M3 is designed to bridge existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter while serving as a Thread border routers and Matter controller to connect and manage Thread and Matter compatible devices The Aqara Home app will support third party Matter devices.
After the M2 Hub is updated in December, Aqara will be able to sell Matter compatible devices.
