The White House deleted a post Wednesday that credited President Joe Biden for an increase in social security payments for seniors, after widespread backlash that led to a fact check that the increase was automatic.
Senior citizens are getting the biggest increase in their Social Security checks in 10 years because of a law signed by President Richard Nixon, according to the White House.
Musk said Wednesday morning that the fact check was the result of the community notes feature.
More than 70 million people who receive social security payments will get an 8.7% increase in their checks in January.
The White House did not reply immediately.
Musk responded to the White House's post by saying that their goal was to make the most accurate source of information on the planet. The "Birdwatch" community fact checking program was launched in January 2021.
Biden is ramping up a last-minute campaign pitch to older voters, warning Republicans are threatening the future of Social Security and Medicare. The senator's plan to sunset all federal programs after five years was slammed by Biden at an event in south Florida. Scott says he has no intention of cutting benefits for senior citizens. Polls suggest a Republican wave is likely in Tuesday's elections, which could see the GOP winning control of both the House and Senate. Republicans blame Biden and Democrats for high inflation.
After George W. Bush advocated for partial privatization of Social Security, Democrats used it as a campaign tactic. Democrats have suggested that the GOP plans still exist even though they don't. In September, Murray made a false claim that Republicans plan to end Social Security and Medicare if they win back the Senate.
Social Security benefits will go up in 2023.
Biden is against the GOP's pitch to older voters.
There's a case for a Republican sweep on election night.
