Kids, parents, and Google Assistant users near and far now have access to a childhood- adapted virtual assistant experience.

Safety features and customization updates are included in the latest virtual assistant update. A range of new choices, including kid- directed responses and voices meant to mimic the educational and emotional voice of a teacher or friendly adult, make the digital Assistant experience more familiar to its users.

Payam Shodjai explained that the customizations aren't just for parents to better oversee their children's device use, but also part of a larger goal to create a more natural, voice-forward helpers that's accessible to all users. He said that 700 million people use Assistant every month to get things done across the world. An assistant that is more proactive and inclusive is what we envision when we look ahead.

Kid-friendly updates like these, which will work across all devices once activated in your Google account settings, embrace the use of tech as an at- home resource for families and offer smarter ways to use Google's resources are just some of the benefits of using tech as an at- home

New account-specific parental controls

If your child's voice has been added to your Family Link account, you will be able to use the new features. Users can modify the profile's media settings, enable or disabling certain Assistant functions, and even establish Assistant downtime for child accounts if they choose to do so.

Account holders can pre-select which music and video providers they want their child to watch. Children can be given access to news channels. There is an option for parents to choose what answer the assistant gives.

Basic Assistant functions, such as making phone calls, can be restricted on child profiles, and the update now allows account holders to set downtime just like on personal devices.

If you want to block off usage time or adjust the controls, you need to go to the assistant settings, navigate to parental controls, and adjust to what works best for your family.

Kid-friendly Google Assistant voices

Shodjai said that today's kids are growing up with technology instead of using it. It's important for us to approach kids' interactions with assistants in a responsible way.

This was part of the process of designing a more diverse range of voices for the assistant. Four new Assistant voices were created based on responses from parents and children and are meant to acknowledge a range of genders and regional dialects.

More than 300 voice actors took part in the casting call for the new voices. They are supposed to be good friends. Shodjai said that they speak in a slower style which helps with story telling and comprehension. Each voice uses different words and phrases to give the same answer.

Google's kid-friendly dictionary

A new dictionary of words, phrases, and definitions will be introduced by the search engine. When your child asks a question, your child's voice will be detected by the assistant and it will offer simplified and age appropriate answers.

The feature was built with the help of partners and sources that create age-appropriate dictionary answers. From this baseline, the feature was tested with both parents and children of different ages.

There is a new update for speakers, smart displays, and mobile devices.
