Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg celebrates for Tottenham
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's goal in the 95th minute sent Tottenham through to the last 16 as Group D winners

The way that Spurs do it is hard.

They were heading out of the competition just over an hour after they finished top of the group.

It's not the first time Spurs fans have gone through a nervous night in Europe, and Tuesday's match in Marseille was no different.

The supporters are used to it. They needed a draw in Barcelona to finish second in their group and get into the last 16.

It was described as "mission impossible" by the former manager.

As events unfolded in France, it became clear that their task was more complicated than they first thought.

Three of the four clubs topped the group at some point in the evening as Spurs' position in the group changed six times.

Two teams that were going to qualify for the last 16 at half-time were knocked out of the competition by the end of the night.

The best record of any side in their first appearance in the competition in six seasons was achieved by Eintracht Frankfurt, who finished the group stage on 10 points.

How events unfolded on an eventful night

As group leaders, Spurs traveled to France and were level on points with Sporting Lisbon.

They knew a win would send them through even if they didn't win.

All four teams were in with a chance to progress.

In 39 minutes, Sporting took a lead over Frankfurt and went top of the group, ahead of Spurs.

At the half-time break, Marseille was up by one. As a result of that goal, Spurs moved up to second place and into third place.

It didn't take long for Spurs to come back in the second half, and when Clement Lenglet made it 2-2, they jumped back up to second.

Spurs returned to the top of the group after Frankfurt and Sporting played out a goalless draw in the second half.

10 minutes later, the German side scored again, and they overtook Spurs as group leaders and moved up to fourth. They had to wait to find out the result in France.

The goal was scored in the 95th minute by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who came from behind to score.

The goal meant that Spurs went through as group winners and that Marseille missed out on European football for the rest of the season.

How you reacted on social media

Richard says it's the most Conte thing he's ever seen. Boys are very fortunate.

It's how you finish that matters. Come on, you suckers!

Mark, don't know what's going on. Needed a result away from home in the last game. Do you remember another campaign? You Spurs, come on!

Mike said that the city must be gutted. Instead of going to the last 16 they don't even qualify because they lost to Spurs and went all out to win.

The Spurs game is a good example of a two half game.
