The female-presenting nipple is returning to the platform, along with other flavours of nudity. It's an attractive lure to both former and potential new users at a good time.
The ban on adult content on the platform resulted in a 30 percent drop in traffic to the site. Today's announcement seems to be trying to repair some of the damage that has been done by nudity on the site.
"We now welcome a broader range of expression, creativity, and art on the site, including content depicting the human form," the post said.
Even if your creations contain nudity, mature subject matter, or sexual themes, you can now share them on Tumblr using the appropriate community label so that everyone remains in control of the types of content they see on their dash.
Community labels allow users to mark their content as depicting drug and alcohol addiction, violence, or sexual themes.
"Nudity and other kinds of adult material are generally welcome," reads the new guidelines. "We're not here to judge your art, we just ask that you add a Community Label to your mature content so that people can choose to exclude it from their dashboard if they choose."
This doesn't mean that people are allowed to post porn on the site. Any actual action will have to remain implicit because depictions of sexually explicit acts and content with an overt focus on genitalia are still firmly forbidden. The platform makes an exception for "historically significant" images of people going at it if the appropriate community label has been applied.
The 1814 Japanese block print The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife and an ancient Roman statue of god Pan with a goat are both depictions of bestiality. Under the guidelines, bestiality is still not allowed.
The website has reached out to the site.
There has been renewed attention to the site because of the takeover. Users critical of Musk's proposed changes have compared his takeover to the downfall of Tumblr after Yahoo's $1.1 billion acquisition in 2013) In response to unpopular changes such as the porn ban, Yahoo and its later parent company, Verizon, slashed the value of the platform. Six years later, the current owner bought the site for $3 million.
The revulsion at Musk's plans for Twitter have some users suggesting a return to the late 2000s'Blogging platform of choice. The revival of the female-presenting nipple may be just the stimulation they need to dig up their old accounts.
The nudity decree isn't a return to the golden age of boobs, butt, and blogs. Due to how app stores, credit card companies, and governments view adult content, it's not feasible to revive the "go nuts, show nuts" slogan.
It's definitely a step closer to the meme of yore when the nipples were free.
