The first rankings are only the beginning.

Ohio State and Oklahoma were both ranked in the first rankings of the year. The Buckeyes won the national title in the first year of the current system.

59 percent of the teams ranked in the top four in the first rankings went on to make the playoffs, so there's plenty of room for challengers to emerge as the season progresses.

College football rivalries are still to come.

Fans don't have to wait long for the biggest game of the year with Georgia and Tennessee playing on Saturday. The winner will be in a good position to win the SEC East title and face Alabama in the conference championship game.

The Volunteers may have to beat the Tide again in order to win the conference title.

It's not hard to imagine a scenario in which both Tennessee and Georgia make the playoffs. The loser of Saturday's game could sneak in as the third or fourth seed if it loses to Alabama.

The Big Ten's game of the year is expected to be between Ohio State and Michigan.

The rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan could be one of the most memorable in the history of the game after the two teams beat each other. The winner of the Big Ten East will have to avoid an upset against Illinois or the winner of the Big Ten West in order to get into the playoffs.

With the SEC and Big Ten all slated to play each other, there's a chance that the SEC and Big Ten favorites will play each other, which could lead to the SEC and Big Ten favorites playing each other. The Pac-12 could send a team to the field if they slip up.

Tennessee has initial bragging rights from the top of the rankings.
