Who should replace McKennie if he misses the World Cup opener? (1:44)

If Weston McKennie can't play in the World Cup, Herculez Gomez has a debate about who should take his place. There is a time and a place for this.

The Italian side's 21-game winning streak was ended by a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Reds at home. It was the end of a 13-game winning streak.

With both sides already through to the knockout stages of the European club competition, it was only a matter of time before the Reds got off to a good start. Napoli thought they'd taken the lead after a VAR decision denied the defender his second goal in the competition.

It looked like the tie was going to end goalless, but just when it looked like it was going to end that way, Salah popped up to convert Darwin's shot at the back post.

Positives

There were more minutes for Jones on Tuesday. He's only 21 and it's easy to forget. Good teams can win ugly, and that's what the Reds did against the leaders.

You can watch LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, more on the US version of the network.

Negatives

If not for a couple of inches in the penalty areas, this would have been very different for the Reds as they were unable to assert their dominance over a side that have been a real handful for them in recent years.

Manager rating (out of 10, 10 = best)

The charismatic manager celebrated his 400th game with three points. He will probably forget this one in a few years, but what a journey it has been for the Reds.

I grasped onto a first-time strike from Khvicha Kvarats Khelia that took a nasty hit off Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Excellent defensive awareness snuffed out an early attack by the Italians. Couldn't force a breakthrough despite being whipped in some wicked crosses. He had a clean sheet.

The big defender racked up his 200th appearance for the Reds and celebrated with a goal and assist. He was not impressed with Victor Osimhen's actions.

Ibrahima Konaté was wrestled to the ground by Osimhen after he ran towards the Naples penalty area from deep in his own half. I was booked for catching Lobotka late.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was sloppy. Nodded the clearance back into a dangerous area and responded well with a good foot. Penalized for a foul throw and was troubled by Kvaratselia.

Although it was a bit of a camera save and the goalkeeper looked equal to it, Thiago started brightly and drew a rare stop from Alex Meret with a powerful effort from Salah's pull-back.

A delivery that took every Red shirt out of the game, but the VAR spared his blushes, was made possible by Fabinho's flip of the heels. It was only by avoiding a booking that I was able to show some magic.

The ball was hit to safety by the box that was hammered to it. He's almost 37 now and still playing football, and in the engine room as well, so you have to respect that.

The ball was close to going in, but it dipped just over the bar. Maybe he should have hit the target after his brilliant work from Firmino.

FW Mohamed Salah is a selfless man. He won't mind that one bit, as he asked questions all evening, including a lovely pass that picked out Jones that cut through a crowded penalty area, before he stabbed home the winner.

The contest turned into a scrap as chances were scarce. His cross was defended well before he found Jones with an outrageous flick that was headed over by the opposing player.

Substitutes

There was an injured skipper in the 48th minute. It's probably not the time or circumstances that he wanted. He was able to get into the stand from Jones' lay-off.

There were late minutes for the teenager but nothing more than a brief appearance.

The difference was made by Darwin Nunez in the 73rd minute when he replaced Jones. At the last second, a low cross was nicked away from the Egyptian at the other end of the field.

A very brief appearance from the bench for the creative forward, but no time to make a difference.

The young man who made his senior debut late on had a great night.
